About Presenting Startups
BrightScope®, Inc. is a financial information company that brings transparency to opaque markets. Delivered through web-based software, BrightScope data drives better decision-making for individual investors, corporate plan sponsors, asset managers, broker-dealers, and financial advisors. BrightScope primarily operates in two major segments: Retirement Plans and Wealth Management.
Challenge: Hacker's choice: work with our unique dataset of SEC + FINRA financial advisor information to create analytics or a visualization of something interesting. We propose working with free-form customer complaint/dispute data for categorization purposes, or working with the geospatial information to develop a visualization of advisors and their work histories over time.
Language: Python
Prize: 3-month contract with BrightScope with an option to do contract-to-hire if winner is exceptional or an iPad or cash prize
StackIQ (formerly Clustercorp) offers a highly scalable multi-server management system for cluster and cloud computing. Based on the popular Rocks open-source software, StackIQ’s Rocks+ dynamically provisions and manages collections of servers to create a robust, reliable, connected compute fabric for cluster computing, data centers, cloud computing, and ‘big data’ applications.
Challenge: Rocks (see http://www.rocksclusters.org and http://www.stackiq.com) is a modular framework for designing, deploying, and managing software stacks across clusters and clouds. Our challenge is to build a web-based graphical interface to the Rocks Command Line (we understand this is a big project, so bits/pieces/proof-of-concepts would all be interesting). The reference for the command-line can be found here:http://www.rocksclusters.org/roll-documentation/base/5.4.3/c2083.html
Language: Anything you'd like for web-based front-end (GUI); needs to make calls to a Linux command-line back-end and display/aggregatestdout (note: the Rocks back-end is coded in Python and XML)
Prize: iPad 2 (16 GB, Wi-Fi)
Deal Current, one of the nation’s fastest growing daily deal software companies, offers a robust suite of hosted social commerce solutions and sales force training tools for media publishers who want to increase revenue. Launched in 2008, Deal Current is privately held, profitable, and achieving rapid market penetration in 100+ cities serving respected media leaders including American Consolidated Media, Journal Broadcast Group, Buffalo News, and the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, and Triton Digital Media.
Challenge: We would like to build a functional Iphone app called Deal Tracker.Merchants can download this for free and use it to manage deals bought through the deal current system. For the below features we will provide creative assets for the challenge: Click here for more information.
Language: Any
Prize: $750 cash in exchange for the source code and job interviews if desired
StockTwits is a social, stock micro-blogging service. StockTwits is an open, community-powered idea and information service for investments. Users can eavesdrop on traders and investors, or contribute to the conversation and build their reputation as savvy market wizards. The service takes financial related data and structures it by stock, user, reputation, etc.
Challenge: We would like to see data visualizations and representations of real-time trends in the StockTwits stream. Visualization ideas would be a heatmap of recent stocktwits message volume to visually see what industries and stocks are hot on StockTwits at the moment or other type of visualization to show the trends within the StockTwits data.
Languages: HTML, Javascript, Ruby.
Prize: $500

SweetLabs (a.k.a Opencandy) builds products that empower developers to offer users a richer and more compelling application experience through two unique platforms: Pokki, which brings media-rich web applications directly to the desktop, and the OpenCandy Software Network, which offers user-friendly software recommendations through the download and installation process.
Challenge: TBD
